Hotel Seminar

Sumatron is sponsoring a comprehensive 4-day electrical engineering seminar (November 14th - 17th 2023) at The Inn at Laguna Beach in Laguna Beach, CA, entitled: “Generating Station and Industrial Plant Protection, Operation, Maintenance and Design”.

The updated course is based on the 2nd edition of Tom Baker's 2018 CRC Press book “Electrical Calculations and Guidelines for Generating Stations and Industrial Plants”, and associated “EE Helper Power Engineering Software”.  Both the book and the software are included with the course!!!

The seminar covers over 130 calculations in support of protection, operations, maintenance, and the design of generating stations and other large industrial facilities.  It is also approved for continuing education credit by IEEE.

This is our 19th local hotel seminar and we have also completed 30 on-site presentations of the course for protection engineers, nuclear generating stations, municipal utilities, cooperatives, investor owned power producers, and engineering companies.

Target Audience

The seminar is designed for system engineers, protection engineers, protective relay technicians, distribution engineers and generating station and large industrial plant design and support electrical engineers.

Course Presenter: Tom Baker

Tom is the founder and principal engineer for Sumatron in support of large generating stations.  Baker has completed protection reviews for over 35,000 megawatts of nuclear, coal, oil, and gas generating units; consequently, he is well aware of protection oversights that can negatively impact the bulk power electrical system and the availability of large generating stations and covers them in the seminar.

Previously Tom worked for Southern California Edison (SCE) for 36 years and had progressive responsibility as a protective relay technician, metering engineer, protection engineer, distribution engineer, apparatus engineer and for the last 15 years with SCE he was the principal electrical engineer for 12 large fossil fuelled generating stations.

Baker holds two personal patents and had the originating ideas for two additional SCE patents, all in the electrical power field. Tom completed a master’s degree in electrical power engineering and management and is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
